Maria Sassalou

Co-founder · Urban & Spatial Research Lead

Maria Sassalou is an urban planner, PhD researcher, and Co-founder of Geosophik, where she works on urban and spatial research with a focus on open data and participatory mapping. Her work explores how people experience and respond to spatial challenges, especially in relation to climate, mobility, and inequality. She is currently pursuing her PhD at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, researching climate (im)mobilities, environmental justice, and gendered experiences of displacement. Maria holds an MSc in Urban and Regional Planning from the National Technical University of Athens and has over five years of experience working as a field engineer with the Hellenic Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. She has been actively involved in post-disaster response, including extensive fieldwork after Storm Daniel in Greece, where she carried out housing damage assessments and worked closely with affected communities. Her work combines qualitative research, participatory mapping, and spatial analysis using GIS, with a strong interest in storytelling and digital ethnography. She is particularly interested in connecting research with real-world needs, bringing together policy, data, and community knowledge to support more inclusive and practical spatial solutions.
